Open or Enclosed Vehicle Transport?

In order to transport your vehicle most efficiently and cost-effectively, it's important to know about different transporting techniques, such as open and enclosed trailers. The type of vehicle you have, and the destination where you will transport it, will help determine whether you need an open or enclosed trailer.

Open Vehicle Transport

There are many different types of open trailers, ranging from small three vehicle carriers to the large 11 vehicle carriers that you often see on the Interstate. An open trailer is uncovered and is the more popular and the more frequently used trailer.

Advantages. Open transport is cheaper than enclosed vehicle transport. Price is usually determined by the weight of the vehicle being shipped.

Disadvantages. Open trailers will be subject to the elements of nature (rain, snow, wind, dirt and dust).

Enclosed Vehicle Transport

Enclosed trailers are usually custom-built trucks that are hard sided and fully enclosed. This way, your vehicle is completely protected from external hazards such as dirt, dust, rocks, and weather elements. Most enclosed vehicle transport trailers also have excellent suspension and air-ride cushions that minimize vibrations. They also usually have floor mats and seat covers for additional protection.

Advantages. The vehicle is well protected from the elements of nature.

Disadvantages. Enclosed vehicle transport cost much more, typically 25% to 50% more expensive than open vehicle transportation. Remember, price tends to be determined by the weight and size of the vehicle being shipped.

Be sure to trust only reliable vehicle transport company if you are moving expensive or classic vehicle. Choose a company that has several decades of experience, particularly classic and antique vehicle shipping.
